Using Social Media (Twitter) for Business

October 6, 2011

Twitter is becoming a more popular platform for businesses to utilise in their social media marketing mix. However, merely having a twitter account will not increase your sales, revenue etc. There are techniques that will make your twitter experience more rewarding and successful. One point to keep in mind is that twitter should most often be paired with a blog. Twitter provides a snapshot, a 140 character message that is often a morsel of what information needs to be provided. Following up on your tweets with blog postings is an effective way to ensure your followers are able to find what information you want to present them with in one place.

Until your twitter followers believe you are credible and trust you there isn’t going to be many rewards stemming from your twitter account. Credibility stems from not only your tweets, but having a blog to back them up with.

To effectively use your twitter for business it is important to find established bloggers and twitter feeds in your industry and follow them. This will allow you to see what content they post about and to keep informed. Use their content as a basis to work from in creating your tweets and blog posts.

Another technique that can be used is to incorporate several elements into your social media such as marketing, customer service, networking, personal research and branding. These elements can be effectively utilized by things such as Tweepi which allows you to follow the followers of top bloggers in your industry. Some other marketing techniques to use include running special deals and promotions through your twitter feed or announcing events on twitter.

Personal Branding can be accomplished by helping people with their problems on twitter that are in your field. This is also another way to gain credibility with your followers. When they see that you know what you are talking about they would be more inclined to use your services.

Finally, it is important to check your twitter account often to ensure that there are no customer service or public relations issues that need to be taken care of. Maintaining an active online presence and responding to others in a timely fashion will keep you on the right track to success.
